July 15, 1918 - January 16, 2017
Lorene J. Flenniken, 98, of El Dorado, passed away Monday, January 16, 2017, at the Medical Center of South Arkansas. She was born July 15, 1918, to John C. and Ella Hobson Jones in Oklahoma City, OK.
Lorene gave more than 35 years of her life serving the citizens of Union County with her service which began in 1952 as a deputy in Circuit Clerk R.E. Buck's office earning $250.00 per month. In 1962 she was promoted to the office's Abstractor where she was trained to use a new piece of equipment called a Photostat machine which meant documents no longer had to be typed out but rather a white on black copy could be produced. In 1967 Lorene was elected by the voters of Union County to be our Circuit Clerk and began her 21 years of service on January 1, 1967 and retired on December 31 1987. July 15, 2008 was declared by Judge Mike Dumas as Lorene Flenniken Day in Union County.
Lorene was a member of Murmill Heights Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing dominos, cards, watching Razorback Football and Basketball, and playing the piano. She was active in many Union County clubs and associations such as past secretary of Union County Singing Class, Song leader of Senior Citizen Club, past President of AARP, President of Senior Citizen Club, past president of Business Women's Club, Ladies Auxiliary of Union Medical Center , RSVP and enjoyed daily trips to Champagnolle Landing.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husbands, Jewel C. Flenniken, Sr., I.J. Mitchell, Cecil Rushing; son, Jewel C. Flenniken, Jr.; and daughter and son in law, Gloria and Bob Calhoun.
Survivors include her daughters, Wanda Cardinal and Marcella (Gene) Perdue of El Dorado; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and sixteen great great grandchildren; along with her special friends Vivian Walker, Catherine Thompson and Grace Calhoun.
Visitation will be held from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 19, 2017, at Young's.
Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2017, at Young's Chapel with Rev. Billy Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Arlington Memorial Park under the direction of Young's Funeral Directors.
