Mary Evelyn Jones, 81, of Searcy died Monday, July 15, 2013. She was born April 28, 1932 in Rose Bud. The daughter of Baptist minister, R.E. Sr. and his wife Cordie Pruitt, she grew up picking cotton and honing her legendary skills in Southern cooking alongside her now deceased brother, (Junior) and sister, (Lettie Hopper). After marrying her late husband, Carthel on January 4, 1950, the couple settled in Searcy and started a family, including two surviving daughters, Debbie Higgs (Hubert) and Pam Carpenter (Doug); three grandsons, Jeremy Eskridge, Heath Carpenter (Hannah), and Harrison Carpenter (Megan); and seven great-grandchildren, all to whom she was affectionately known as Granny.

A charter member of Westside Church of Christ and a member of the College Church for the last 20 plus years, Mary was a life-long Christian. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend and a true Southern gem: gracious, devoted, and full of kindness. She was one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed, but her family now rejoices in her reward: "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints."

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Powell Funeral Home. Funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Powell Funeral Home Chapel with interment at White County Memorial Gardens. www.powellfuneralhome.net.
