Marie Frisby Broach, long time resident of Camden, Arkansas died peacefully February 8, 2011 in St. Michaels, MD. She was 96. Born and raised in Union County, Arkansas, she was the daughter of William “Bill” and Nettie (Howard) Frisby. She attended Warner Brown Nursing School, El Dorado, Arkansas graduating in 1935 as a Registered Nurse.
In 1937 Marie moved to Camden, Arkansas where she would spend her professional life. She first worked in the Robins Clinic and by 1945 was elected President of the Arkansas State Nurses Association. In 1952 She was recruited to organize, teach, and become Director of the first Practical Nursing School in Ouachita County. She later joined the staff of the Ouachita County Health Department. As a public health nurse, Marie helped initiate the county's first polio campaign by bringing the vaccine to local children through the county's schools and churches. In 1966, she would begin another first for the county by implementing a school health program, becoming the first school nurse for the Camden School District. In her seventies, Marie would help begin one last health program, the first Home Health Care Program for Ouachita County.
Marie was honored over the years for her contribution to the community. In 1962, she was named Nurse of the Year by the Arkansas State Nurses Association. She received the Dr. Tom T. Rose Award from the Arkansas Public Health Association and in 1972 she was named Camden's Woman of the Year by the Camden Lions Club. Throughout her career she was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.
Marie was not only defined by her profession, but also by her dedication and love of family, church and friends. Upon coming to Camden as a young woman, she met Donald Broach, whom she married in 1940. They would joyfully raise two children there. They were active and longtime members of Camden's First United Methodist Church. Her greatest joy was spending time with her cherished grandchildren and great-nieces and great-nephews. Marie was a dedicated nurse, devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. Her wonderful sense of humor, warmth and caring will be missed.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Donald Broach. She is survived by her daughter, Judy Proctor and husband, George of San Francisco, CA; her son, Don Broach and wife, Mary Margaret Drewrey of St. Michaels, MD; a niece, Marie Norris Pendley of Selma, CA; four nephews, James Langley and wife, Mary of Smackover, AR, David Langley of Murphy, NC, Charles Lee Norris and wife, Joy of Selma, Ca, and James Ruble and wife, Martha of Springfield, MO; three grandsons; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Camden, Arkansas. Reverend Buddy Ratliff of the First United Methodist Church presided. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 121 Harrison NW, Camden, AR 71701. Arrangements were under the direction of Proctor Funeral Home.
