Mr. Dewitt Bates, 84, of Hamburg, died Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at the Drew Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Mr. Bates was a native of Ashley County; a resident of Hamburg for the past 52 years and a former resident of Bastrop, Louisiana. He worked for International Paper for 38 years having retired in 1993. He was a member of the Westside Baptist Church in Bastrop, Louisiana. He was the caretaker for the Trafalgar Cemetery for many years. He lived for his girls and his grandchildren, was an avid hunter and he sold produce from a stand at his home.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Mae Gwin Bates in 2007; a daughter, Betty Ann Rowe in 2006; his parents, Walter & Laura Ellinburg Bates; a brother, Robert Bates and two sisters, Dorothy Finley and Beulah Gates.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Jeffers and Kay Bates both of Snyder; two sisters, Gladys Pryor of Monticello and Adine Irons of Snyder; three grandchildren, Walter Rowe, Vlissa Rowe and Jennifer Jeffers and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Friday, December 28, 2012 at the Sardis Baptist Church with Rev. Sammy Land and Rev. Larry Donaldson officiating. Burial will be in the Trafalgar Cemetery. Pallbearers are Thomas Minga, Dan Atwood, Junior Irons, Toby Irons, Micky Gwin, Dale Bates, Wesley Alexander and Mark Stanley. Memorials may be made to the Trafalgar Cemetery Association, c/o Mr. Ben Lawrence, 859 Ashley 105 Road, Montrose, AR 71658.
