Sybil's Obituary
Sybil P. Harrell, 88, of Locust Bayou, AR passed away Sunday, December 10, 2017 at her home. She may have lost her battle with cancer, but she awaits a crown of victory in heaven. At age 22, Sybil accepted Jesus as her Savior and was a member of the Church of Christ.
On December 21, 1928, Sybil Lorece Parker was born in Louann, AR to J. Monroe Parker and Rachel York Parker Landreth. As many families faced difficult times during the Great Depression, Sybil, at the age of four, moved to Locust Bayou, AR to live with her grandparents, George and Lula York. As a child, she vowed to never move again and would live the remainder of her earthly life in this small South Arkansas community.
Learning to work at an early age, Sybil started at her mother's store, Rachel's Grocery, in Locust Bayou. In 1949, she was hired by Mr. Herman Cook as a bookkeeper at his wholesale business, Ouachita Grocery Co. in Camden. After his passing in 1959, she began a long career in insurance, starting at the D. W. Harrell Agency in Camden. Later, she worked at the Dick Sutherlin Agency and Harrell Insurance Agency (Hampton). After 57 years in one field of work, Sybil finished her career as office manager for Campbell & Company (Hampton) in 2016.
Sybil also sacrificed her time to serve others. She was appointed by former Governor David Pryor to serve on the State Building Services Council in 1975. She was a board member for the Calhoun County Library for many years. Finally, Sybil was a board member for the Locust Bayou Water Corp. and was instrumental in getting the water system for the community in the 70's. This is her story. Now, she sings a new song with the angels.
In addition to her parents, Sybil was preceded in death by her stepfather, Guy Landreth; her brother, Vernon Parker; and her faithful and loving husband of over 71 years, Donald O. Harrell. She is survived by her son, Danny Don Harrell (Locust Bayou); a sister-in-law, Kitty Parker (Lakeland, FL); a cousin; nephew; niece; some special relatives; and a number of good friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Maul Road Church of Christ Food Pantry, 1425 Maul Road, Camden, AR 71701.
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 13, 2017, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Proctor Funeral Home of Camden and a memorial service will follow in the chapel. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Camden. Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
