December 2, 1923 - March 9, 2015
Newton Preston Ramsey passed from this life to his eternal reward on March 9, 2015. He was a devoted son, farmer, soldier, businessman, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and most importantly, a Christian. Born December 2, 1923, to Walton Otto Ramsey and Georgia Gowens Ramsey, Newton enjoyed an extremely happy childhood on the family farm with older sister, Bonita and younger sisters, Gladys and Wanda. Living through The Great Depression, times were hard during Newton's early years, but he loved growing up on the farm; especially when it included driving the tractor and maneuvering wagons. Legend has it, he would practice parking the wagon in a small space for hours on end. Walking across the top of the mountain with his siblings, Newton attended school at the old West Richwoods' one-room school building, where he met his future wife, Margie Finch. For entertainment, Newton hiked and fished on Tomahawk Creek and gathered with the family each evening to play games or sing old-time gospel songs.
On March 11, 1944, Newton and Margie were married. Soon afterward (1945), he was deployed by the Army to Japan where he helped in the reconstruction after World War II. During his absence, his first son, Charles, was born. Two daughters followed, Dorothy and Barbara. Six years later, the light of his life, Carl, was born.
Though Newton loved farming, he felt the need to make a change in order to achieve his goal of putting four children through college. So, in 1956, he left the farm and bought Gowens Feed and Seed on Main Street in Mountain View, renaming it Ramsey Supply. Newton was active in the community and a charter member of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce. In 1963, he built his current home on Main Street, a favorite gathering place for family and friends. During retirement, Newton and Margie enjoyed extensive traveling and camping in one of their many recreational vehicles. Together, they traveled to every state in the mainland and especially enjoyed camping alongside America's rivers and lakes. During these years, Newton also enjoyed working with wood and created many beautiful pieces of furniture.
Newton served as a deacon at the School Avenue Church of Christ in Mountain View. He was also active in serving behind the scenes to develop and maintain a computerized version of the church books and records. Newton was instrumental in creating and drawing the plans for the current church facility. He loved the church family, where his own father had served as an elder and song leader for many years. He read his Bible daily and with Margie's help, raised his children to love and worship God.
Newton was preceded in death by his parents, Ott and Georgia Ramsey, his sister, Bonita Risner Gill, and his wife of 66 years, Margie Jean Ramsey. He is survived by two sisters, Gladys Greenway Johnson and Wanda Stewart of Mountain View, AR. He is also survived by his son, Charles Ramsey (wife Diana) of Mountain View, AR; daughters, Dorothy Rodgers (husband Derrell) of Mountain View, AR and Barbara Reding (husband Charles) of Heber Springs, AR; and son, Carl Ramsey (wife Kathy) of Lamar, AR.
Newton is also survived by eight grandchildren: Greg Ramsey of Mountain View, Brian Rodgers (wife Pearl) of Little Rock, Anne Rana (husband Ryan) of Fayetteville, Angie Russell (husband Ryan) of Bryant, Jeff Ramsey (wife Danna) of Jonesboro, Walt Reding (wife Ginny) of Star City, Kelsey Ramsey and Keaton Ramsey both of Clarksville, as well as twelve great-grandchildren: Henry and Bela Rodgers; Abby, Jude, and Gabriel Rana; Aidan and Ellie Russell; Sophie, Maddie, and Eliza Ramsey; and Asher and Emilia Reding.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 12:30-2:00 pm at School Avenue Church of Christ in Mountain View, Arkansas. Funeral services will follow the visitation beginning at 2:00 pm also at School Avenue Church of Christ with interment at Fredonia Cemetery in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Pallbearers are Eddie Stewart, Garry Stewart, Mike Stewart, Johnny Greenway, Dana Woods, and Tommy Cleveland. Honorary pallbearer is Benny Risner.
