Another Soldier goes home. William Thomas "Bill" Stewart, 89, of Blytheville, AR., passed from this life Tuesday, March 06, 2012, at his home.
Born in Holland, MO., to Frank and Myrle Edwards Stewart.
He was a retired electrical employee for Ark-Mo-Power and Ark-Power & Light Company for 37 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in many European Campaigns and achieving the rank of Platoon Sergeant in Company A, 140th Infantry Regiment. Prior to being activated in the U.S. Army at the beginning of WWII, he was serving with the U.S. National Guard in Steele, MO in 1938.
Bill was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as senior deacon for several years. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing with his grand and great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his daughter, Carolyn Stewart Tilley; brothers, Charles Stewart, Rex Stewart, Frank B. Stewart and two infant brothers; sisters, Georgia Atkinson and Maude Boerner.
He is survived by: his wife of 66 years, Opal Dean Gowan Stewart, of the home; granddaughters, Cindy Byrd and husband Jim of Armorel, AR and Heather Swafford of Blytheville; great grandchildren, Alysen Swafford, Cade Byrd and Sydney Byrd; sister, Delna Carter and husband, Johnny of Steele, MO and brother, Pat Stewart and wife, Gin of Gilmer, TX; his best friend, Wayne Rhodes of Blytheville and son-in-law, Rick Tilley of Mt. Home, AR.
Funeral services were in Cobb Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Elmwood Cemetery.

Opal Dean Stewart, 92, of Blytheville, Arkansas, passed from this life March 13, 2015, at St. Bernards Regional Medical Center in Jonesboro.
Opal was born in Denton, Missouri, to Bill and Artie Mae (James) Gowan. She was a resident of Blytheville for 50 plus years.
Opal was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Blytheville. Opal was known to family as well as friends as "Gran". Her greatest enjoyment in life was spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, William Thomas "Bill" Stewart; a daughter, Carolyn Stewart Tilley; four brothers, James Gowan, John Will Gowan, Howard Gowan, and Eugene Gowan; and two sisters, Barbara Gowan and Gloria Myers.
Opal is survived by one sister, Doris McCollum of Columbus, Mississippi; two grandchildren, Cindy Tilley Byrd (Jim) of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and Heather Swafford (Doug Brees) of Blytheville; three great grandchildren, Alysen Swafford of Blytheville, Cade Thomas Byrd and Sydney Dean Byrd of Jonesboro, Arkansas; and one son-in-law, Richard Tilley of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
Services were held at Cobb Funeral Home Chapel.
