Verna Harris Lamkin of Chidester passed from this life on August 21, 2015 at the John R. Williamson Hospice House in El Dorado, AR. She was sixty-one years old.
Verna was an educator. She retired after twenty-eight years’ service in Arkansas public schools where she taught special education, kindergarten, and primary students in Cale, Wickes, Prescott, and Chidester Elementary schools for the Camden-Fairview District. After retirement from public school, she organized and taught the Ouachita Child Development ABC Pre-school class for Ouachita Industries for six more years, bringing her total years spent as an educator to thirty-four.
After retirement, Verna was involved with Ouachita County Master Gardeners, Ouachita County Hospital Auxiliary, and Gideon’s Auxiliary. She and Betsy Carroll began and co-led a Strong Women and Men’s exercise class in Chidester. She was also involved in church and Sunday school activities at Tates Bluff Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder. Verna will be remembered for her generous and caring spirit, her ability to see a need and address it, and her deep love for her family and friends.
Verna is the second daughter of the late John Franklin and Hilma Lee Stiles Harris. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Corbet Lamkin of the home; a sister, Amelia (Amy) Young and husband, James of Harrison, AR; a brother, John Lynn Harris and wife, Jo Ann of Stephens, AR; and nephew Joshua Lynn Harris of Harrison, AR. Great-nephews include Devin Lynn Harris of Hope, AR and John Tanner Harris of Willisville, AR.
Proctor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Camden 6-8 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2015. A private interment will be held at Missouri Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at Tates Bluff Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday. Friends and relatives are invited to have a meal and time of fellowship following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tates Bluff Presbyterian Church, 2141 Ouachita 23, Chidester, AR 71726 or the Gideons International, PO Box 707, Camden, AR 71711.
