One person was killed and nine others were injured, five seriously, in holiday traffic accidents Monday in the immediate Fort Smith vicinity. A truck accident Monday at 9:30 am, on US highway 64, near Dyer, Arkansas, claimed the life of Doris Butler, 12-year old daughter of Mr and Mrs E E Butler, rural route 1, Alma, Arkansas, and resulted in injuries to eight others. Another truck accident in Fort Smith resulted in serious injuries being suffered by the 23-year old driver, Eugene Ward, 418 North Tenth street, who is being treated at St Edwards Mercy hospital for concussion of the brain, face lacerations and a shoulder injury. This accident occured at North Thirteenth street and Grand Avenue shortly after noon Monday.
The Butler girl, whose left leg was almost severed, died at a Fort Smith hospital at 10:20 am, less than an hour after the accident. A truck on which she and 26 others were riding side-swiped a bridge.
The most seriously injured in this accident included Mrs Herbert Shelly, 34, route 3, Alma, whose left leg was amputated above the knee, and whose right leg was broken below the knee; Ella Lee Whitlock, 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs N A Whitlock, route 3, Alma, broken right leg which may have to be amputated; Druscella Shelly, 12, daughter of Mrs Herbert Shelly and Mr Shelly, badly injured right leg; and Marie Lewis, 25, daughter of Mr and Mrs Jow Lewis, Alma, both legs broken.
