Eva Lou Caplinger, age 84, of Hermitage, Arkansas died at her son’s home in Benton, Arkansas on Friday, January 19, 2007. Eva was born May 16, 1922 in the Gravelridge Community to David Allen and Geneva Johnson. She attended Hermitage Public Schools graduating in l940. She married Ralph E. Caplinger on January 20, 1940. Together they had two children Ralph E. “Ed” Caplinger, Jr. and Donna Graves. During World War II as a member of “The Greatest Generation”, she worked in the Evansville, Indiana shipyard as a certified welder building LST’s for the US Navy. After World War II, Eva and her family followed the construction trade living and working in numerous states. Upon her husband’s retirement in l969, she returned to Hermitage, Arkansas. Eva worked in the Hermitage School System tutoring students in reading and math until her retirement in l990. Soon after retirement, Eva returned to the Hermitage Schools volunteering in the Grandmothers Tutoring Program until health issues required her to leave the program in l994. Eva was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Ralph E. Caplinger; parents David and Geneva Johnson; sisters Molly Johnson and Marie Land and brother David Johnson, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memories her son Ralph E. “Ed” Caplinger, Jr and wife Velia of Benton, Ark; daughter Donna Graves and husband Larry of Lexington, Tenn; brothers Donald Lee Johnson and wife Earlene of Hot Springs and Dean Johnson and wife Barbara of El Dorado, Ark; sister in law Sue Johnson of Banks, Ark. She is also survived by grandchildren Elisa Mosley and David Caplinger both of Benton, Ark, Teresa Fenn of Medina, Tenn and Amanda Daniels of Jackson, Tenn. and five great grandsons and one great granddaughter. She also leaves a host of friends, family and former students who will forever treasure her memory. The family wishes to thank Dr. Loretta DePalo and the staff of the Arkansas Heart Hospital Wound Clinic for their loving care of Eva during her time of need. Thank you to Saline Memorial Home Health and Saline Memorial Hospice, especially Troy Smith, RN for the wonderful care, concern and compassion shown to Eva and her family. The family also wishes to thank Eva’s dear friends Sue Johnson, Dixie Reynolds, and Kate Green for the love and friendship given to Eva for so many years. Special thanks to Eva’s daughter in law Vel for her tireless love and care to Eva during her illness and for her special friendship and love which lasted over 50 years. Funeral services were 1:30pm Sunday, January 21, at Hermitage United Methodist Church Hermitage, Arkansas with Brother Wayman Mann and Bro. Marty Reep officiating. Melody Ferguson was pianist and soloist was Debbie West. Burial was in Holly Springs Cemetery in Hermitage by Frazer’s Funeral Home of Warren. Active pallbearers were Jason Johnson, David Caplinger, Chase Caplinger, Gary Moseley, Nick Thompson and Mario Sherril.
