When Rufus Madison Hawkins was born on November 7, 1875, in Old Hickory, Arkansas, his father, William, was 52 and his mother, Martha, was 40. He married Bessie Nelzora Andrews on January 3, 1898, in Conway, Arkansas. They had seven children in 10 years. He died on June 28, 1913, in his hometown at the age of 37, and was buried there.
