R.D. "Rick" Bailey, 95, of Mulberry passed away Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014, in a local nursing home.
He was a retired truck driver, attended Vine Prairie Baptist Church in Mulberry and was an Army veteran of World War II, where he was a member of the 36th Infantry Division as a medic. The 36th was the first American combat division to land on the continent of Europe. There, they fought grueling campaigns in France, Italy and other European engagements. He served in Patton's Army under commanding Gen. Alexander "Sandy" Patch. Mr. Bailey received seven major battle ribbons and a Silver Star. The Silver Star is the third highest military decoration that can be awarded to a member of any branch of the armed forces for valor in the face of the enemy. He was the most highly decorated living World War II veteran in the state of Arkansas.
He was born Jan. 6, 1919, in Clarksville to the late Harvey and Nancy (Adams) Bailey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Velta Jean (Blasingame) Bailey, and a son, Jack Bailey.
Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ocker Chapel in Alma with burial with military honors at New Cemetery. The family will visit with friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Ocker Funeral Home in Alma, 917 Hwy. 64 E., Alma.
Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Williams and Ollivette Bailey, both of Mulberry; one son, Douglas Bailey of Spiro; eight grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Cody Bailey, Doug Clardy, Jeremy Brake, Jesse Williams and Audie Bailey.
Honorary pallbearers will be Derek Morris and Lee Williams.
