When James Alva Garfield Baker was born on April 27, 1880, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, his father, John, was 44 and his mother, Martha Shehorn, was 34. He married Elsie Metilda Howard on September 3, 1900, in Pope, Arkansas. They had five children in 17 years. He died on November 8, 1954, in Center Ridge, Arkansas, at the age of 74, and was buried there.
