When William Fredric Gottberg was born on May 28, 1868, in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, his father, Frederick, was 37 and his mother, Bertha, was 32. He married Ida Mae Gassaway on December 25, 1890, in Petit Jean, Arkansas. They had nine children in 18 years. He died on August 24, 1944, at the age of 76, and was buried in Conway, Arkansas.
