NANCE, R.L. - Senator R.L. Nance died Tuesday morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home on South Fourth Street in this city. He arrived home from Little Rock Thursday night and it was realized from the first that his condition was serious. Saturday afternoon he had a sinking spell but rallied and hope was entertained that he might still pull through. Monday night he seemed better than usual and talked and joked with the family and seemed in the best of spirits. About midnight he fell into a stupor from which he was difficultly aroused and just at daybreak the end came. It was very peaceful and he suffered not at all. Senator Nance has been in very poor health for several years and had been forced to retire from active business. The legislative session two years ago was hard on him and he had looked forward to the present session with doubt and misgivings. It was a source of much satisfaction to him that he had been able to return home for the last few days. He suffered with Brights disease of the kidneys and other complications that made his illness a painful one. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church yesterday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock and were conducted by Rev. Peter Carnahan. Interment was at the Oakley Chapel cemetery where several children of the deceased are buried. The funeral was largely attended and the church was crowded. Mayor Homan issued a proclamation asking that the business houses close from one to three o'clock and the majority were closed during that time. Both the public school and Rogers Academy were dismissed for the afternoon that the teachers and pupils might attend. The deceased was a Mason and the local order attended in a body. Senator Carlock of Madison county, as representative of the state senate committee, made a short talk and there were brief remarks by others. R.L. Nance was born January 6, 1854 near Versailles, Rutherford county, Tennessee. He was married November 23, 1876 to Miss Lula E. Brame of the same state and to them were born eleven, children, seven of whom with their mother survive him. They are: Dick Nance, Lawton, Okla.; John Nance, Sapulpa, Okla.; Mrs. A.M. Harding, Fayetteville; and Misses Bonnie and Fruzanne, and Masters Will and Jim, who are still at home. Mrs. Harding came up from Fayetteville Sunday and Miss Bonnie Nance, who had just gone to Lawton returned the same day. Neither of the older sons, who are railroad men, were able to get here until yesterday morning. Mr. Nance has no other immediate relatives, being the last member of his family. Dr. Maddox of Eureka Springs is a nephew of the deceased. He united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church when eighteen years of age and at the time of his death was one of the elders in the Presbyterian church of this city. Coming to Benton county in 1879 he was one of the first citizens of Rogers and by his straightforward business methods, his strict attention to the matter in hand, and his ability to keep in touch with the people and their needs, he was given almost every office in the hands of his local friends. He served a term as city marshal, was a deputy sheriff four years, was a justice of the peace four years, and served five terms as mayor of Rogers, being the first mayor after Rogers' incorporation as a city of the second class. He served two terms in the house of representatives, being a member of the houses of 1895 and 1899. Three years ago he was elected to the state senate from Benton county and was just beginning his second legislative session. By the death of Senator Nance Rogers loses one of its best citizens, the community a valued friend and advisor and his family a kind and loving husband and father.

NANCE, Lula Ellen BRAME - Mrs. Lula Ellen Nance, widow of the late Hon. R.L. Nance of Rogers, died Saturday night at Fayetteville at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.M. Harding. Mrs. Nance had been in poor health for some time and it was realized that her condition was serious but the end came so suddenly that it was a shock to friends and relatives. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 at the home of her son, John W Nance, south of Rogers, and were conducted by Rev. Ben H. Moore of the Presbyterian church. Interment was in the Oakley Chapel cemetery by the side of her husband who died February 9, 1909. Lula Ellen Brame was born in Bedford county, Tennessee July 19, 1857. She was married in that state to R.L. Nance and came to Northwest Arkansas with her husband and her sisters, Mrs. D.A. Oakley and Mrs. W.A.O. Jones, in 1879, 2 years before Rogers was organized as a town. They were farming in those early days but Mr. Nance came to Rogers in its infancy and was actively identified with its business and civic growth until the time of his death 15 years ago. Mr. and Mrs. Nance were the parents of 11 children, 7 of whom are still living: R.S. Nance and Mrs. Bonnie McBrinn and Mrs. M.G. McGehee, all of Oklahoma City; Mrs. A.M. Harding of Fayetteville; John W. Nance of Rogers; James C. Nance of Walters, Okla. and Will L. Nance, who is in a federal hospital at Legion, Texas. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. W.A.O. Jones of Rogers. O.A.P. Oakley of this city is a nephew of the deceased.
