Bessie Mae Burgess, 81 year old resident of Gentry, Arkansas, died April 18, 2016 at Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale, Arkansas. Born November 28, 1934 in Wetumka, Oklahoma, she was the daughter of Riley Mathis and Clora Verda (Reading) Mathis. Mae married Glen Burgess and they lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma for many years before moving back to Northwest Arkansas in 1987. She worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell in Tulsa. After moving back to Gentry, Mae worked for many years at Dayspring. Mae was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Siloam Springs and the Telephone Pioneers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; one daughter, Vicky Stone; three infant children: Steven Glen Burgess, Amber Suzanne Burgess, and Rodney Chriss Burgess; one sister, Lillian Dunavant; and her parents.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Melissa Wilson of Gentry; one grandson, Brandon Stone of Siloam Springs; four sisters: Norma Lee Bateman of Wichita, Kansas, Wyetha Carol Kibby of Three Rivers, Michigan, Ethel Marie Mattox of Westville, Oklahoma, and Donna Jean Thompson of Bixby, Oklahoma; one brother, Riley Jack Mathis of Southwest City, Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will be announced at a later date.
