Carolyn Camp Smith, 83, of Conway passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 12, 2009, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Carolyn was born December 8,1925 in Conway, Arkansas, one of two children of the late Guy A. Camp and Ethel B. Camp. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Guy A. Camp, Jr.
After graduating from Conway High School in 1942, Carolyn attended Hendrix College where she completed a degree in economics in 1946. In 1948 she married Samuel Theodore "Ros" Smith, Jr., of Conway. As a Navy bride, she was stationed with her husband in San Diego, CA, Pensacola, FL, Corpus Christi, TX and Key West, FL before returning home to Conway in 1955.
Carolyn was a member and past president of Chapter E of PEO, Conway Junior Auxiliary and First United Methodist Church where she served on the Altar Guild. She was the registrar at Hall High School and worked for the Arkansas Wildlife Federation. She was devoted to her family, particularly her grandchildren, and to her many friends and will be remembered as a gracious, hospitable lady who loved traveling, gardening and bird watching.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ros Smith, son Ted Smith and wife Laurie, daughter Cathy Ketcheside and husband Kenne, all of Conway, Arkansas and son David Smith and wife Barbara of Washington, D.C. and by her grandchildren Sam and Cate Ketcheside of Conway, Emily Smith of Fayetteville, AR, Margaret Smith of Conway, AR and Laura and Jenny Smith of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by her sisters-in law, Nancy C. Smith (widow of the late Dr. Thomas W. Smith) of Little Rock and Jo Smith (widow of the late Gallatin H. Smith) of Conway and their families.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the loving care given to her by her special caregivers during her illness.
A memorial service, in celebration of Carolyn's life, will be held at First United Methodist Church, 1610 Prince Street, Conway, AR at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2009. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately following the service. Memorials in remembrance of Carolyn can be made to the permanent endowment for First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller McNutt Funeral Home, Conway, Arkansas.
