Thomas Henry THOMPSON

Thompson Family Cemetery
Hempstead County,
Arkansas

Birth: April 5, 1821
Jasper County, Georgia, USA
Death: January 22, 1892
Hempstead County, Arkansas, USA

Although where he was born was in Jasper County, GA on the date of his birth, April 5, 1821, where he lived became part of Newton County, GA, when it was created December 24, 1821, from parts of Henry, Jasper, and Walton Counties.

He was the son of Samuel Thompson (ca 1780-ca 1842) and Mary Lumsden Thompson, both of whom died in Newton County, Georgia.

CENSUS:
1850, Paulding County, GA, p 54
1860, Hempstead County, AR, p 711
1870, Hempstead County, AR, p 440
1880, Hempstead County, AR, p 366

He and Matilda apparently moved their family to Hempstead County, Arkansas, between 04 Feb 1857, when Thomas Henry Thompson sold his land in Paulding County, Georgia, to W.W. Simpson and 19 August 1857, when their son, Henry Harvey Thompson was born in Hempstead County.

He was a Freemason, a member of Masonic Lodge No. 239 (Whitfield), Hope, Hempstead, Arkansas.

He married Matilda Ann Phillips on September 15, 1841 in Paulding County, GA.

A family record by his son, Hilry Bell Thompson (his first name is also spelled Hillary and Hillery), gives January 29, 1892 as his date of death. However, 22 Jan 1892, the date of death on his marker (which has a Freemason symbol on it) is confirmed in "Masonic Proceedings - The Fraternal Dead from the twelve counties of Southwest Arkansas," Hempstead Trails, Vol. V, No. 2, October 1990, p. 26, Hempstead County Genealogical Society.

He probably died at his farm (GPS coordinates 33.711094° N,-93.58156° W), located about 3.5 miles north of the center of Hope, on the west side of what is now Hempstead County Road 248, and about 0.5 mi north of I-30.

His will (Hempstead County, Arkansas, Will Book D, pp. 109-111; signed 25 Oct 1881, probated 10 Apr 1900) leaves his estate to his wife Matilda Ann Thompson [who actually preceded him in death] and children [unnamed]. It names his son, John M Thompson (an attorney), Executor.
