MELBOURNE — Idavonne Rosa, 87, died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, in a Batesville hospital.
Born Aug. 10, 1921, in Fort Worth, Texas, she was the daughter of Dr. W.O. and Minnie Belle White Taylor. She was a lifelong Southern Baptist and a member of First Baptist Church of Melbourne.
She served in the Peace Corps in Kabul, Afghanistan, from 1966 to 1972. Qudseya Entezar, whom she later adopted, returned to the United States with her from Afghanistan to attend high school.
She earned a registered nurse's degree from the University of Central Arkansas in 1974. For 18 years she worked in a 12-county area as director of in-home services for the East Arkansas Area Agency on Aging in Jonesboro. A licensed social worker, she also served as director of nursing for Pioneer Nursing Home in Melbourne and administrator of Methodist Nursing Home in Fort Smith.
She volunteered for the March of Dimes, the American Red Cross, the League of Women Voters, the Altrusa Club, the Manna House and the Redbud Extension Homemakers Club. She enjoyed traveling, having visited Eastern and Western Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Mexico, where she eventually bought a home.
She served on the Melbourne City Council in the mid-1970s and the Melbourne City Airport Commission in 1979 and volunteered for former U.S. Rep. Bill Alexander. She was a member of the Ozark Folk Center's Committee of 100 and volunteered for two tours of duty with the Arkansas Travelers, campaigning nationally for Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996.
She was a member of "Who's Who in American Nursing" in 1991. She served as vice-president and president of the Mid-America Congress on Aging. She served on the Advisory Committee for Continuing Education in Nursing at Arkansas State University, the Advisory Committee for Nursing at Delta Vocational Technical School in Marked Tree and as an instructor for the Continuing Education Program for the Arkansas League for Nursing.
At the age of 84, she became a hotel housekeeping supervisor, spending three summers working at The Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park.
Survivors include a son, Walter E. "Butch" Rose of Fayetteville, N.C.; a daughter, Qudseya Niam of Huntington, N.Y.; four grandsons, Farar White Rose of Troncones, Mexico, Walter E. Rose Jr. of Memphis, Jeffrey A. Rose of Houston and Paul E. Rose of Aberdeen, N.C.; four great-grandchildren, Samuel Rose, Kelly Rose, Sarah Rose and Daniel Rose; two brothers, Ira White Taylor of La Jolla, Calif., and Jack Taylor of Flagstaff, Ariz.; and two sisters, Billy Jo Tatum of Melbourne and Sammy Taylor Denhoff of San Diego.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Rosa; a stepson, Jerry Rosa; two brothers, Orville Taylor and James Taylor; a sister, Ann Packer; and a son, Jimie Lee Rose.
A memorial service was at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lone Star Cemetery on Highway 9 between Melbourne and Sylamore. Arrangements were by Eddie's Family Funeral Home of Melbourne.
