Johnnie Mae Morgan Benton, 83, passed away Monday, March 8, 2010, at Timberlane Health & Rehabilitation in El Dorado, Arkansas.

She was born November 9, 1926, in Seymour, Texas, to Claude Edd and Minnie Mae Casselberry Morgan. A graduate of Seymour High School and Decatur Baptist College (Texas), Johnnie lived in Dallas where she worked as a reservationist with Braniff Airlines and met her future husband, Robert (Bob) Hugh Benton, who was a student at Baylor Dental School. They married on December 11, 1953, in San Diego, CA, where Bob was stationed with the U.S. Navy.

The Benton family moved to El Dorado in 1955. Johnnie was very involved in the community throughout the years, volunteering with PTA, as a Cub Scout and Camp Fire Girl leader, and as a member of the El Dorado Service League. She was co-owner of The Gazebo gift shop for 29 years. In 1959, she was a founding member of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church where she taught children’s Sunday School and was currently a member of First United Methodist Church of El Dorado. Johnnie was known and loved by a host of friends throughout El Dorado, and she especially enjoyed her time with them. She loved her bridge club, which had played together for 52 years, most recently meeting at Timberlane so that Johnnie could still take part.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert Hugh Benton, brother Tommy Morgan, and sister Wanda Morgan Sickler. She is survived by her son, Jack Morgan Benton of Sugar Land, TX, her daughter, Nancy Benton Parks and husband Barry of Winston-Salem, NC, and her granddaughter, Marie Elise Parks of Houston, TX.

Jack and Nancy wish to thank all of their mother’s dear friends and the loving and professional staff at Timberlane who have each made her last days full of joy and laughter.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 11, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in El Dorado with the Rev. Jim Polk officiating. Visitation will follow in the church’s fellowship hall. A private graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.

Memorials may be made to Life Touch Hospice, 2301 Champagnolle Rd., El Dorado, AR 71730.
