Hattie was born in Cale, Arkansas. She was the daughter of Joseph William Ridling and Lyda Mae Westmoreland. She attended elementary school at Cale and then went to high school in Magnolia where she was elected Beauty Queen in 1923. Hattie transferred her membership from the Baptist church to the Methodist church on August 5, 1935. She went on to become Secretary, Vice-President and Treasurer of the United Methodist Women.
