Mrs. Rhoda Hinds

Died at the Residence of Her Daughter,
Mrs. Jennie Brasel, at Muskogee,
Saturday

Died, at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Brasel, Muskogee, I.T. June 10, at 6 p.m., aged 88 years, two months and nine days, Mrs. Rhoda Hinds.

Mrs. Hinds was born in Rockingham Co., N.C., April 1, 1817. Her maiden name was Webb.

In 1839 she joined the first congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church ever organized in North Carolina. She was a consistent member of this church to the day of her death, and loved it with a surpassing love.

In 1841 she was married to Rev. John Hinds, whom she survived 43 years. In 1856 they removed to Newtonia, Mo., and in 1858 to Boonsboro, Ark., where their children entered the then famous Cane Hill schools. The residence later was on the prairie Grove battle ground, at which place her husband died July 16, 1862. This continued to be the famliy residence for many years. As the children scattered the old home was broken up, and in recent years the deceased has lived with first one and then another of her children. For the past several months she has been with her daughter, Mrs. Jennie Brasel. For some time she has been failing, due to the infirmities of old age, and the end came at 6 p.m. June 10. Though expected, it was a shock to all.

Three of her children, Mrs. R.A. Medearis, Mrs. Jennie Brasel and Prof. J.I.D. Hinds were with her in her last hours. W.G.D. Hinds and daughter, Miss Ethel, arrived about 9:30.

The funeral services were held at the residence at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, and in the absence of her pastor, Rev. M.W. Robinson, were conducted by Rev. T.F. Brewer, of the M.E. Church, South, a lifelong friend of the family. Her remains were laid to rest by the side of those of her husband, who had preceded her so long before, in the old church yard on the Prairie Grove battle ground Monday, June 12.

Six children survive her: Mrs. R.A. Medearis, Westville, I.T.; W.G.D. Hinds, South McAlester, I.T.; J.L.D. Hinds, Lebanon, Tenn.; Mrs. Jennie Brasel, Muskogee, I.T.; C.W. Hinds, Peggs, I.T.; Mrs. J.C. Ryan, Walla Walla, Wash.

This is the close of a noble and beautiful life. Hers was the most utterly, unselfish and intensely Christian character it has been the fortune of the writer to know.
