Company D 6 West Virginia Infantry
Civil War Union
March, 1843 - January 18, 1933

Charles Parker Pool was born in Ritchie County, West Virginia to Thomas and Anne Pool. He was in the Civil War and served in Co. D with the 6th West Virginia Infantry Regiment. He was shot in the left leg which had to be amputated above the knee.

He never spoke of the Civil War, he put it behind him and moved on. He first married Evalin Dotson 2-17-1867 in Adair County, Missouri. Don't know what happened to her, but in December of 1868 Charles married Martha "Mattie" A. Dobbs. Daughter of Patrick Dobbs born Virginia and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Evie born Virginia. Mattie was born 11-29-1840 in Virginia and died 5-26-1912 in Carroll, Texas County, Missouri.

Charles and Mattie lived in Oak Side, Shannon County, Missouri. Mattie is buried in Oak Side Cemetery along with an infant grandson, the child of John Williams and Etta Pool-Williams.

Charles and Mattie had 3 children, 1 unknown died before 1880, Mary 1871 and Etta 1873. Only Etta lived to adulthood and married John Williams in Missouri, they later moved to Kansas.

After the death of Mattie, Charles married Clara Bell Straw-Booth on 8-15-1915 in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was 27 and he was 71.

Clara was the daughter of William Jackson Straw and Elizabeth Jane Kettner. Clara was born 7-24-1889 Nevada, Story County, Iowa. Her family and death record has 7-24-1888 Polk County, Missouri but the Iowa state birth record has her right date and place of birth. The Straw family moved to Polk County after 1895 from Nevada, Iowa. Clara lived until 5-9-1990. After Charles died she returned to Wishart, Polk County, Missouri where her brother and sister lived. She is buried there in the Enon Cemetery with them and a number of other relatives. Clara is on record as being the last person in the state of Missouri to receive a Civil War pension.

Clara first married Clyde J. Booth on 9-9-1905 in Kansas. They had 4 children; Golda "Goldie" 1906, Glenn 1907, Viola 1909 and James 1911 all in Kansas.

Charles and Clara were the parents of 5 children, Charles Thomas Pool 1916, Ernest John Pool 1918, Florence Pool 1922, William "Bill" Pool 1925 and Garland Pool 1927. Charles Thomas died in 1944 and is buried with his father in this cemetery. The rest are still alive and living in Missouri. Charles Parker Pool loved to garden. He always had his over all pockets full of seeds and a stick. When he found an empty spot in his garden he would poke a hole with the stick and drop in a seed.

He planted and kept a garden until he was 85 years old. He would sit down and scoot backwards in his gardens and hoe in front of him as he went. The Pool home in Washington County, Arkansas is now part of Devil's Den Park. The headstone for Charles T. Pool is Charles P. Pool's son Charles Thomas Pool.
