Floodwaters sweep truck off bridge; 3 drown
Bald Knob, Ark (AP) A man and two of his sons drowned after their pickup truck was swept off a bridge by floodwaters, but a third son clung to branches for two hours before being rescued, authorities said Sunday.
White County Coroner Mary Beth Kennedy identified the victims as Gary Clark, 32, of Bald Knob, Adam Clark, 10, and Travis Clark, 11.
The surviving son, Phillip Clark, 9 was at home Sunday with his mother in Augusta in neighboring Woodruff County, Ms. Kennedy said.
Bald Knob had received more than three inches of rain since Thursday morning, the National Weather Service said Sunday. Skies were cloudy but little precipitation was reported on Sunday, forecasters said.
Gary Clark tried to swim for help after the small pickup truck plunged into Glaze Creek, four miles east of Bald Knob, at about 6 p.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Tim Osborne of the White County Sheriff's Department.
The father's body was found about 100 yards, downstream from the bridge, which had no railings, Osborne said. The brothers were found in the cab of the pickup truck in about 30 feet of water near the bridge, the spokesman said.
"The father and the 9-year-old were able to get out," Osborne said. "The father told him to hang on, that he was going for help. He never returned."
Some people driving on a nearby county road heard the child's screams, Osborne said, "and they got out, dove in, and swam to him, then contacted our office."
A search for the Clarks launched Saturday night, "but the water was so high and rising, and the wind was so strong, we just couldn't do anything," Osborne said.

The bou told us that as soon as he hit the water, he started dogpaddling into some brush and he just held on. Must have been two hours," said Osborne. "He was just scared and he was hanging on for dear life."
Phillip Clark was not hospitalize and was able to talk to police about the envents Saturday night, Osborne said.
The bridge is a 60 foot span on a county road about three miles north of U.S. 64, Osborne said.
