Obituary
Martha Matthews Thompson, 93, of Augusta, Ark., passed away Thursday, Sept. 15, 2011. She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Lexa, Ark., to William Edward and Daisy Mae Johnson Matthews. Martha graduated from Holly Grove High School in Arkansas in 1935, attended Monticello A&M and went on to graduate in 1939 from Arkansas State Teachers College, now known as the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. She taught school for 37 years in Hartford, Cotton Plant and Augusta, Ark. She married Edward Clyde "Pint" Thompson on April 21, 1944, in Holly Grove, Ark., and they were married for 42 years. While Martha taught school and was high school librarian in Augusta, she was "Teacher of the Year," a senior class sponsor many times, Beta Club sponsor, a PTA member, and the Augusta yearbook was dedicated to her one year. She was a member of Augusta First Baptist Church and the WOM, or Women on Mission. She was the organist for Augusta First Baptist Church for more than 20 years. She is survived by two children, Edward C. "Sonny" Thompson Jr. and wife Cindy of Forrest City, Ark., and Joan Beard of Columbia; one sister, Anna Rae Matthews Brown of Holly Grove, Ark.; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two nieces; two nephews; and a host of family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her twin brother; one grandson; and one nephew. Visitation was Saturday, Sept. 17, at Rhodes & Son Funeral Home in Augusta. The graveside service was Sunday, Sept. 18, at Augusta Memorial Park, officiated by Brother Max Sharp. Arrangements were by Rhodes & Son Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Mike Pirkle, Larry Silski, Bobby Scoggin, David Thompson and Danny Yates. Honorary pallbearers were William D. Matthews and Elijah Moore.
