BELLA VISTA — George Roy Holcomb Jr., 81, of Bella Vista died Feb. 1, 1996, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale. He was born Dec. 9, 1914, in Springdale to George Sr. and Lelia Johnson Holcomb. He graduated from University High at Fayetteville in 1931, received his bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of Arkansas in 1935, his master's degree from the UA and a specialist degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas. He taught in schools in southwestern and eastern Arkansas. In 1960, he was named assistant professor of secondary education in the UA College of Education.

He retired from the UA in 1983 after 23 years. He worked for 10 years at First National Bank in Fayetteville, and was an Army infantry veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ripley Holcomb, in 1980; two brothers.

Survivors include his wife, Marjie W. Holcomb of the home; one brother, Joe Holcomb of Rogersville, Mo.

A private graveside service will be held in Bluff Cemetery in Springdale with the Rev. Wayne L. Bartruff and Dr. James E. Still officiating. A public memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Callison-Lough Funeral Home in Bentonville. Cremation is by Benton County Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the University of Arkansas Scholarship Fund.
