Nola Elizabeth Stone, 88, died of natural causes Tuesday at her home in Conway.

She was born March 20, 1919, in Conway to the late Clem and Virgie Malitta King Stone.



She was preceded in death by her brothers, John King Stone and Jesse B. Stone.

She was a lifelong member of Cadron Ridge Baptist Church where she was baptized at age 16.

After graduating from Conway High School in 1937, she moved to Little Rock where she enrolled in St. Vincent's School of Nursing, becoming a registered nurse in 1941. With the out break of World War II, Miss Stone enlisted in the United States Navy and served there until the war's end, earning the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. When war broke out in Korea she volunteered again and served her country 18 more months.

Upon her discharge from the Navy, she elected to further her education by entering anesthesiology training for a year in New Orleans, La. She then returned to Little Rock and enter private practice as a nurse anesthetists. During the course of her lengthy career she practiced at the Baptist Hospital, St. Vincent's Infirmary and the Veteran Administration Hospital from which she retired about 1985.

Since retirement Miss Stone remained very busy building and landscaping her home in Conway. She was an avid gardener, quilter, reader and hostess often entertaining her many friends and relatives with great enthusiasm. Having no children of her own Miss Stone affectionately considered her nine nieces and 20 great nieces and nephews her children and played a major role in helping to rear most of them. She was greatly loved and will be very missed

Miss Stone is survived by her two sisters, Frances Meyer and Tacy Reed and husband Orval, both of Little Rock; nine nieces and 20 great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway with Rev. Randall Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Stone Cemetery.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

Pallbearers will be John Moody, Robert Goldie, Michael Goldie, Caleb Walker, Cape Walker, and Jim Stone.
