Death's Call
Esquire, John M. Kerr, of Holly Grove answers the summons, "Come Home"
At his home in Holly Grove yesterday morning, at 7:20 o'clock, Esq. John M. Kerr, one of the oldest, best known, and most highly respected citizens of Monroe County, passed to his final reward.
Mr. Kerr has been in feeble health for several weeks and was near death's door several times. He has been a patient sufferer and when the death summons came, he met it without struggle.
Mr. Kerr was one among the oldest citizens of our county.
He was born in Montgomery County, Alabama. Served four years in the Confederate Army. He married a Miss Susan Sutton, who died some twelve years ago. From this union, there was a family of eight children, nearly all of who survive the aged parent. Among them Mesdames J.B. McDonald, Budd Walls, Nelie Morris, Sallie Youngblood, Messrs. R.T. and T.S. Kerr.
For sixteen years, the writer has been intimately acquainted with Mr. Kerr and during that time his loyalty as a true and faithful friend has grown constantly. His regular weekly letter to the Argus from Holly Grove have brought him into close touch, not only with the writer, but with the hundreds of readers of the Argus who have read his articles with much interest. His loving heart has always shown out in his letters. It is my privilege and pleasure to know that his life was strong in it influence for good. Eternity only can reveal the greatness of this influence.
True friends, such as this dear old soldier, was to the writer, are like rare jewels. But for the comforting promises of renewing these friendships in a brighter and better world, death's sting would be unbearable.
Parents:
James Kerr (1804 - 1881)
Cynthia Taylor Kerr (1812 - 1888)
Sibling:
John Montgomery Kerr (1838 - 1908)
Rufus Lucius Kerr (1843 - 1935)
