It is with much sadness and loss that the family of Roma Stevens announces her passing on October 5, 2014. Roma was born to Minnie and Oscar Norman at Roasting Ear Creek on November 7, 1920. She had six siblings, two of which died at a young age. She had the deepest level of love for her two brothers, Junious and Hugh Norman, and her two sisters Irene Sutterfield and Mable Treat and was still calling out their names until the end of her life. All of her siblings preceded her in death.
Roma married Arlis Ray Stevens on November 26, 1937. They had 64 years together before his passing in 2001. Their early married life included short periods of work in Calico Rock, Hartford, CA, and Tulsa, OK, where Roma worked in a grocery store. They settled in Big Flat in 1950. Roma successfully operated a grocery store for 25 years followed by ten years of social work with the Area Agency on Aging.
Roma actively supported her community with fundraising for the Big Flat Cemetery. She was referred to as a "ray of sunshine" and one of the first to deliver a dish of food to a family after a death. Other remarks frequently stated were "she is kind, sweet, caring, smart and had a quiet strength".
Roma was a lifetime member of the Church of Christ and attended school in a one room schoolhouse in Big Flat. She walked several miles out of Roasting Ear Creek every day to get the school bus on the main road.
Roma is survived by daughter Joanne Stevens of Conway, son Bob Stevens and Rose of Bee Branch; grandchildren Marbie Stevens-Mitchell and John of Beebe, Brock Stevens and Beth of Clinton, Kurt Stevens and Amanda of Greenbrier, Melissa Mott and John of Nixa, MO, and Sara McCoy and Will of Alexandria, VA. Roma is also survived by great-grandchildren Carlea, Tyler and Logan Stevens of Clinton, as well as many nieces, nephews and other family and friends.
Visitation will be October 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Big Flat Church of Christ. Funeral Services will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Minister Carl Thomason and Chaplin Beth Horton Zinn officiating. Interment following at Big Flat Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Gary Norman, Rick Norman, Darrell Norman, Flynn Norman, Hugh Lawrence and Sonny Woods. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brock Stevens, Kurt Stevens, Tyler Stevens, Doug Stevens and Johnny Mitchell.
The family is so appreciative and thankful for the loving care given by Suzie McCoy as well as many others over time. The family also appreciates the professional care provided by the Hospice of Mountain Home.
