Obituary
Eugene Riley Newby, age 81, of Drasco, AR., formerly of Brinkley, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2007, at White River Medical Center in Batesville after a lengthy illness, with his family at his side.
He was born on May 29, 1925, in Monroe County, the son of the late Pallie Thompson Newby and Henry Jones Newby. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
He was raised in Monroe County and was a 1942 graduate of Brinkley High School. He was employed as a rice buyer for Riviana Foods for 19 years and retired as a grain inspector for USDA Grain Inspection Division.
Mr. Newby served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a signalman on the Cape Trafalgar and the USS John Miller, which was a liberty ship that hauled supplies to the war zones.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was the winner of Cleburne County Big Buck award in 2002.
He is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Mrs. Ann Largent Newby of Drasco; two sons, Gary Newby and wife Robin of Paragould and Joe Newby of Greers Ferry; two daughters, Ange Holland and husband Jim of Benton and Jana Bogy and husband Cecil of Cordova, Tenn.; three brothers, Henry Lewis Newby and wife Maxine of Holly Grove, Thomas Newby and wife Thelma of Pine Bluff and Carl Dee Newby and wife Nita of Brinkley; one sister, Betty Newby Fuller of Brinkley; five grandchildren, Nathan Newby and wife Angela of Conway, Jay Holland of North Little Rock, Corye Donham and husband Craig of Houston, Texas, Allison Newby and Riley Newby, both of Greers Ferry; one great-grandson, Owen Newby of Conway; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by; a brother, Walter "Dub" Newby; his grandfather, Eugene Riley Thompson, and grandmother, Mary Ann DeBerry Thompson.
Funeral services were held at Heber Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens in Heber Springs.
Arrangements are by Heber Springs Funeral Home.
