1873 - 1948
J. H. Matthews, aged 74, died at his home, Camden, Route 2, at 4:45 a.m. Sunday. He was a life-long resident of Ouachita County, a member of the Fairview Methodist Church and a Mason. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Harry Robertson, and Mrs. W. H. Greer, one son, Newton Matthews and one grandson all of Camden. Funeral services were held at Champion Hill Presbyterian Church at 3:30 p.m. today, conducted by the Rev. Horace L. Villee, assisted by the Rev. M. E. Scott and the Rev. Garland Anderson. Burial was in Mt. Horeb Cemetery. Active pallbearers: Martin Gaston, Bruce Greer, Curtis Morgan, O. R. S. Greenwood, Robert Lee Rowland and Adolph Wilkinson. Honorary Pallbearers: Jeff May, Sam Tyson, Dr. J. B. Jameson, Dr. W. R. Elliott, A. A. Wilkinson, C. R. Kelly, J. W. Hecker, Eldridge Roberts, Roy Kennedy, Colin Threadgill, O. H. Milner, Will Warnock, R. H. Runnels, Zan Gaston and D. W. Patterson. Proctor's in charge. (Camden News - August 2, 1948)
