When the tidings spread over town Monday afternoon, May 26th, 1911 that Mrs. Lawton had passed from earth, sorrow was the portion of those who heard and many were the expressions concerning her worth, for all realized that Bentonville had lost a most estimable character - one whose life influence had always been for good. Mrs. Lawton's maiden name was Peterson. She was born seventy years ago in Ohio and on March 18th, 1861 was married to I.B. Lawton and this relationship continued until the death of her husband on April 3rd, 1909. Three daughters were born. One, Metta, departed from life before her parents. The other two, Miss Lucy Lawton and Mrs. Kate Lewis, make their home in Bentonville and a granddaughter, Mrs. Berry Walker, resides in Rogers. Judge and Mrs. Lawton had lived in Benton county since 1887 and in Bentonville for eleven years and their former home in Cash Hollow and their home in this city were always noted for their genial hospitality and all the kinder virtues that made a home beautiful. They loved their friends and their friends loved them and the number of their friends was only limited by the number who knew them. Mrs. Lawton united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Ohio many years ago and her walk through life was in accord with that profession. She suffered intensely during the latter months of her life but on Saturday before her death this entirely ceased and she became resigned and happy in the thought that she would soon be released. She apparently held communion with her husband and daughter, Metta, and told those about her bedside of the comfort this gave her. Her departure occurred quietly at 1:30 Monday afternoon. The funeral was held at the home on Tuesday afternoon and was conducted by Rev. Torrence of the Methodist Church and Rev. McDougall of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial in the City Cemetery. A Friend.
