RICE, Miller B. - Following a short illness Miller B. Rice, an old settler of Pea Ridge, died at his home on Saturday, January 14th, 1928 at the age of 78 years. He was born at Riceville, McMinn County, Tenn. in 1849 and moved with his parents, Charles W. Rice and Julia C. Rice, to Pea Ridge when he was ten years of age and has lived on the old home place since that time. In 1879 he married Sally Lee and would have celebrated his golden wedding anniversary this year. He was one of the most liked and highly respected citizens of Benton County and was held in the highest esteem by all those with whom he became associated. Funeral services were conducted at Buttram Chapel Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock in charge of Rev. Hutton of Rogers in the presence of the largest gathering that ever attended a funeral in that part of the county. Rev. A.E. Carnahan and John Buttram assisted in the services after which interment was made in the cemetery at Buttram Chapel. He leaves surviving him his wife, Sallie Lee Rice; a daughter, Minnie, and five brothers, Attorney C.M. Rice of Bentonville; T.S. and R.M. Rice of Pea Ridge; Dr. Clint Rice of Rogers and Will Rice of Hindsville.

Miller B. Rice, one of the best known residents on Pea Ridge, died at his home about one and one-half miles southwest of Pea Ridge Saturday afternoon, January 14, 1928. He was 78 years old and if he had lived a few months longer Mr. and Mrs. Rice would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The funeral services, which were conducted at Buttram's Chapel Sunday afternoon were largely attended. The Rev. Mr. Hutton, pastor of the Pea Ridge M.E. Church, South, preached the funeral sermon, assisted by the Rev. A.E. Carnahan. The many floral offerings showed the esteem in which Mr. Rice was held by his many friends. Interment was made in the cemetery near the little church where many members of the Rice family have been buried. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sallie Lee Rice, and one daughter, Miss Minnie Rice, also there are five brothers: Attorney C.M. Rice of Bentonville; Dr. C.A. Rice of Rogers; T.S. Rice of Garfield; Wilfred Rice of Hindsville, Ark. and R.M. Rice of Pea Ridge. Mr. Rice was born at Riceville, Tenn. in 1850 and was the oldest of ten sons born to his parents, Chas. W. and Julia Rice. They came to Arkansas in 1859 and homesteaded a large tract of land. Miller Rice lived on a part of this homestead since boyhood. Practically his entire life was spent in farming and his neighbors and friends, who knew him best, call him one of nature's noblest.

Miller B. Rice died Saturday, January 14th at his home on Pea Ridge at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 26 days after a brief illness. He had been seriously ill for less than a week. Funeral services were held at Buttram Chapel Sunday afternoon conducted by Bro. Hutton of the Methodist church, assisted by Bro. Carnahan of the Presbyterian church. Burial was in the Buttram Chapel cemetery. A great concourse of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect and love to this worthy friend and neighbor. Mr. Rice was a member of one of the pioneer families of Benton county, being a son of Charles W. and Julia Cobb Rice. He was born in Riceville, Tenn. March 18, 1849 and was 10 years old when the family came to Benton county in 1859 and located on Pea Ridge where they were living at the time of the battle of Pea Ridge. His father died in 1892 and his mother in 1910. There were 14 children, 11 sons and 3 daughters. All of the daughters are dead: Mrs. Mary Mitchell, Mrs. Julia Perkins and Miss Harriet Rice. Of the eleven brothers, two died young - William, the oldest, being killed at the age of 17 at the battle of Jenkins Ferry while serving in the Confederate army, and another dying at the age of four years. Of the nine brothers who grew to manhood in Benton county and have been among the most prominent citizens here, Miller B. was the fourth who has passed to the Great Beyond. Attorney James Rice of Bentonville died in 1910, Dr. Rufus Rice of Rogers, father of Mrs. Pearl Ball and Mrs. T.S. McNeil, died March 22, 1923; and Dr. Munce Rice of Avoca, father of Hugh Rice, died in 1925. The brothers who survive are Wilford Rice of Huntsville, Madison county; Tim Rice of Pea Ridge; Attorney Chas. M. Rice of Bentonville; Dr. Clint A. Rice of Rogers and Roland Rice of Pea Ridge. Miller Rice was converted at an early age but did not join any church. He was married to Miss Sally Lee, who survives him, in August of 1878. Five children were born to this union. Miss Minnie, the only surviving child, has given herself completely to the care of her parents. Uncle Miller never made any pretense of show but was a plain, good man, greatly loved and respected by all. Without any fear of indulging in fulsome praise we are going to say that his equals in dignity and simplicity of character, powers of kindness and real worth as a citizen and neighbor, are few and far between. May the husband to the widow and father to the fatherless, care for the two members of the family who remain. A Friend.
