Mrs. Bess Tate James, age 83, of Newport, died Sunday, April 12, 2009, in Little Rock. Mrs. James was born July 9, 1925, in Arlington, Texas, the daughter of Jake H. Tate and Bessie Price Tate. She was a graduate of Arlington High School and attended the University of Texas at Austin, Texas. She taught in the Newport Special School District for many years, was an active member of the Newport Service League and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newport. Mrs. James was also a member of the Sally Jean Circle, a past president of the Batesville District United Methodist Women, and a member of the Newport United Methodist Women where she held several offices. Mrs. James is survived by two daughters, Barbara "Barbie" Tate James of Forrest City and Joanne James Ballance of Florence, Miss. and several other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Robert Howard "Bob" James in 2005; an infant son and one sister, Lucille Cramm. Visitation for Mrs. James will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Newport First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Beebe Cemetery at 4 p.m. The family requests that memorials be made to the Bob James Memorial Preaching Series care of First United Methodist Church, P.O.
