HOLT, Mary WALKER - Mary Walker, born in Grainger Co., Tennessee January 10, 1823; died January 30, 1922, age ninety-nine years and twenty days. She was married to David Holt in the early 40's. To this union were born six sons, Henry, George, Joe, D.T., John and Sterling, and two daughters, Sarah and Virginia, all of whom they raised to be grown and have families of their own. They left their native state by way of the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River, where they built their own boat and floated down the Mississippi to the mouth of the Arkansas river where the boat was sold and they came up the Arkansas river on a steamboat to Van Buren, Feb. 15, 1852. They then came to Benton county and settled west of Centerton, moving to the present property in 1858 where they shared together the remainder of their days. Her husband departed this life in 1909 and since that time she has been practically blind but was ever patient and willing to take things as they came, having taken the Lord Jesus as her guide in an early day. She is survived by three sons, J.H. and D.F. of Gravette, and Sterling of Mt. Vernon, Wash. and one daughter, Mrs. Sarah Webb of Westville, Okla., all being present when death came except Sterling. Besides her 8 children there were 44 grandchildren, 104 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted by T.F. Jones of Burgin Valley and she was borne to her last resting place in the Holt cemetery by six grandsons as pallbearers. Thus she passed after a century's earthly journey. Contributed.
