Accidental Shot Claims Life of Leroy H. Jones

Leroy H. Jones, resident of Fairmount community, was killed instantly about 3:30 Sunday afternoon when a 12 gauge shotgun in the hands of Allen Lee Burgess, was accidentally discharged. The accident occurred near the Fred Ward home in the Fairmount community. Burgess together with his brother, Cpl. Robert Burgess, and his brother-in-law, Oscar Skaggs, were on a quail hunt and had parked their car in the road near the Ward home. Jones was walking along the road and had stopped at the car for a chat with the boys. As Burgess entered the car with his gun the hammer caught on the side of the door, the charge entering Jones’ left eye and killing him instantly.

An inquest was conducted by Justice Tom Condrey of Springtown with the assistance of Undertaker Leon Wasson of Siloam Springs and the death was declared accidental.

Survivors include his wife and two daughters, Barbara Jean and Martha; his mother, Mrs. Nannie Goodman; and two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral service was conducted Wednesday afternoon at the Shady Grove church by Rev. Carl Nelson and burial was in the Fairmount cemetery.

Leroy Hulbert Jones was born Oct. 5, 1909, in Lincoln County, Kans. He departed this life Dec. 17,, 1944, at the age of 35 years, 2 months and 12 days.

His father preceded him in death on March 23, 1920.

He is survived by his wife, Hazel Lorea, and two daughters, Barbara Jean and Martha Lucinda of the home; two sisters, Lily Eva Estes of Oklahoma City, and Myra Margaret Misner of Gentry; two brothers, Oscar Alvin of Gentry, and Carl Franklin of Fullerton, Calif.; and his mother, Mrs. L. J. Goodwin of Gentry.
