SMITH, L.A. - L.A. Smith died Tuesday morning at his home west of Oakley Chapel, the result of a paralytic stroke received just a year ago and which had kept him bedfast ever since. He had a second stroke Saturday and failed rapidly. Funeral services were held at Oakley Chapel yesterday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Stevenson, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Kline. Interment was in the Chapel cemetery by the side of his wife who died some four years ago. Mr. Smith was an old Confederate veteran and the Daughters of the Confederacy assisted in the funeral services at his special request. Mr. Smith was born February 13, 1840 at Franklin, Herd Co., Ga. and was converted and joined the M.E. church, South at the age of 14 years and had ever since lived a consistent Christian life, a power for good in every community in which he lived and a special influence for the right living of the young people with whom he was unusually popular. He had been one of the most faithful workers at Oakley Chapel and after his affliction he loved to have the young people gather at his home and hold services with him. Mr. Smith came here from Texas in 1906. He is survived by five daughters and one son: Mrs. Dunbar of Midland, Texas; Mrs. Carrie Crouch, who made her home with him; Mrs. R.C. Jones and Mrs. C.H. Brogan, both of whom live west of town, and Dixon Smith of Okla., all of whom were at his bedside when he died. One daughter was unable to come.

SMITH, Martha P. - Mrs. Lazarus Smith died Friday afternoon about two o'clock at her home just west of Oakley's Chapel. Death was the result of tubercular trouble with which Mrs. Smith had suffered for many years. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. Ruebel and Rev. Bearden of Bentonville. Mrs. Smith came here with her husband and family from Texas about three years ago and at first the change of climate seemed to help her greatly but the improvement was not permanent. She was past 60 years of age and leaves a husband and four children; two daughters at home; Mrs. R.C. Jones who lives just west of town and a daughter who lives in New Mexico but who had been called here by her mother's illness. A son of the deceased died just three months ago at the Jones home with consumption. The family have the sympathy of the friends and neighbors.
