Mr. Evert Dale “Mutt” Hughes, 87, of Hamburg, died Saturday, January 17, 2009 at his daughter’s residence in Clyde, North Carolina. Mr. Hughes was a native of Hector, Arkansas; a resident of Hamburg for 76 years. He lived with his daughter in Wisconsin and North Carolina for the past three years. He owned and operated Hughes Grocery for 44 years before retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served during World War II and he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Hamburg. He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Rawls Hughes in 1998; his parents, Charles Arthur & Ella Rosetta McCuin Hughes; three brothers, Arvey, S.G. & J.D. Hughes and two sisters, Ivy Roper and Dessie Myers. He is survived by a son, Guy Evert Hughes and wife, Shelby, of Crossett; a daughter, Lily Mae Shields and husband, Tim, of Clyde, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Susan Nicole Tanksley and husband, James, of Hamburg; Sara Elizabeth Smith and husband, Adam, of Morgan City, Louisiana and William Todd Hughes of Hamburg; seven great-grandchildren, Bliss Payton Tanksley, Jasmine Deon Tanksley, Jacob Craig Towe and Kaven Seth Tanksley all of Hamburg; Victoria Jean Holloway of Bastrop, Louisiana, MalyBu Storm Holloway and Awstyn Skii Smith both of Clyde, North Carolina. Graveside services and burial will be 10 a.m., Tuesday, January 20, 2009 in the Hamburg Cemetery with Rev. Charles Pullin officiating.
