Mrs. Nellie Rea Gordon, age 100, died Tuesday, September 2, in Griffin, Georgia. A retired educator, Mrs. Gordon was the daughter of the late Lula Redmond and John Shirley Sledge. A native of Roanoke, Alabama, she was the widow of Andrew Dudley Gordon of Prescott, Arkansas, where she had lived for 52 years. Mrs. Gordon received her Bachelor of Music degree and her Master of Science in Education degree from Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. She had done additional study at Georgia College and State University, Milledgeville, Georgia; Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas; and Universidad Ibero-Americana, Mexico City, Mexico. She had served as Arkansas state president of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Active in Griffin First United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Maddox-Bailey Sunday School class, the United Methodist Women, and the Young at Heart. She was a life member of National Retired Teachers Association and a life member of Daughters of the American Revolution, Pulaski Chapter. She also had membership in Colonial Dames XVII and Daughters of the American Colonists. Survivors include two daughters, Anna Gordon Burns and husband Frank N. ("Skipper") Burns of Griffin and Ellen Gordon Kidda Thompson and husband Rob Thompson of Charlotte, North Carolina; their children and their spouses Andrew and Leigh Hopkins Burns of Buford, Georgia, Susannah Burns Goodman and Stephen Goodman of Concord, Georgia, Patrick and Starr Daniell Kidda of Washington, DC, and John and Kellia Riddle Kidda of Boone, North Carolina; and two great grandchildren. Graveside services and interment will be, 2:00pm on Saturday, November 8, 2014 at DeAnn Cemetery in Prescott, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Griffin First United Methodist Church in Griffin, Georgia or the charity of your choice.
