Ernest Grober Sloat, 92, of Fort Smith died June 4, 2010, in a Fort Smith hospital.
He was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Fort Smith to Don and Clara Grober Sloat.

He graduated from Fort Smith High School and attended two years of junior college. He was a veteran of World War II and served as a staff sergeant in the 142nd Infantry Division under Gen. Patton, fighting in battles in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. Upon his return home, he and Doris Inez Turner were married in 1947 at First Baptist Church, where he served for many years as a deacon and Sunday school superintendent. They later joined East Side Baptist Church, where he willingly served for more than 38 years as a deacon and in various leadership roles. Mr. Sloat retired from Garrison Furniture company, where he spent most of his working life as an accountant and warehouse and traffic manager.

Mr. Sloat was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of more than 62 years, Doris Turner Sloat; granddaughter, Rebecca Sanders; son-in-law, Travis Sanders; brothers, Don Sloat Jr. and Floyd Sloat; and sister, Louise Sloat.

He is survived by three children, daughter, Sharon Sloat Sanders of Benton and her children, Kyle Sanders and wife Samantha and children Karter and Kenley, Kent Sanders and wife Amy and children Ava and Jack; and Charlotte Sanders; his son, Stacey Sloat of Fort Smith and wife Pam and their children, Stephanie Passmore and husband Gary and children Jennah, Lorrel and Cooper, Jennifer Woolsey and husband James and children Brandon, Emily, Brett, Brooklyn and Ella; and Trey Prieur; and daughter, Sandi Sloat Conley of Fort Smith and husband Bob and their children, Phillip Conley and wife Lindsay and children Emma and Beck; and Kelli Price and son Nekoda.

Funeral service was Monday at 2 p.m. in the East Side Baptist Church in Fort Smith with burial at Roselawn Cemetery, all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

December 15, 1927 - December 23, 2009

Doris Inez Turner Sloat, 82, of Fort Smith passed away Wednesday, December 23, 2009. After many years of battling Alzheimer's disease, she is now sitting at the feet of the Great Physician who has made her complete and whole and one of HIS glorious angels.

Among those waiting at Heaven's Gate to celebrate their reunion were her parents, Hazel and Luther Turner; a brother, Carlos Turner, a granddaughter, Rebecca Sanders; and a son-in-law, Travis Sanders.

Doris was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, and was a member of the 1945 graduating class of Fort Smith High School. She married Ernest, her beloved husband of over 62 years, on Valentines Day. They have three children, Sharon Sanders of Benton, Arkansas; Stacey Sloat and his wife, Pam of Fort Smith, and Sandi Conley and her husband, Bob, also reside in Fort Smith. They have six grandchildren, Kyle Sanders, Kent Sanders, Charlotte Sanders, Trey Prieur, Stephanie Passmore, Jennifer Woolsey, and eleven grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Doris served many years as a church secretary at First Baptist Church and East Side Baptist Church in Fort Smith, In 2004, she retired after 20 years of serving as pastor's secretary at East Side Baptist Church. She had a love for music and was a faithful member of the church choir. Even when names and common sense began to fade, she could amazingly sing for hours without any accompaniment or songbook and never miss a word or tune.

Funeral Service was Saturday, December 26, 2009 at East Side Baptist Church with burial at Roselawn Cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were grandsons Kyle Sanders, Kent Sanders, and Trey Prieur. Also Gary Passmore, James Woolsey, and Roger Lucas.
