Alice Joy Jett Mertz, age 85, died Wednesday, March 20, 2013, at a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, William Noah Jett and Lillie Mae Jett Hurst, her youngest son, Wallace “Wally” Mertz, and her only grandson, Nicolas “Nic” Tapp. Survivors include her son, John Skylar Tapp, her sister, Dorothy (Charles) Ridgway, and her brother, Franklin (Alessandra) Hurst, all of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Alice was a professional educator, professor, and teacher, her career spanning over 43 years. Alice was fiercely independent and lived life truly on her own terms. She achieved high honors, including magna cum laude designation, at every level of her career. She had a profound faith in God which was displayed daily by generous support for numerous charitable institutions, yet through all of her life’s travails, always refused to accept defeat of any kind. She was the epitome of the self made woman, mother, grandmother and professional. She has fought the good fight and now is at rest. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Charitable Christian Medical Clinic, 133 Arbor Street, Hot Springs, Arkansas 71901.
