Mrs. Catherine S. Akers, 85, of Hamburg, died Friday, June 3, 2011 at the Ashley County Medical Center in Crossett. Mrs. Akers was a native and life long resident of Hamburg. She was an accomplished poet having had a book of poetry published. She and her husband, Charles, owned and operated Akers Dry Cleaners for over 50 years. She also owned Akers Fashions in Hamburg. She was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught the Ruth Sunday School Class for a number of years and the Girls Auxiliary. She was the past president of the Hamburg Home Demonstration Club. She loved taking care of her yard and her flowers.

She is preceded in death by a granddaughter, Catherine Raelinn Elton in 1994; her parents, John & Lena Shockley and a sister, Athleen Ford.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Charles Akers; three daughters, Cheryl Elton and husband, Ray, Linda Akers, and Vicky Rial and husband, Danny; three grandchildren, Christy Roberts and husband, Scott, Lisa Davis and Lauren Rial all of Hamburg; five great-grandchildren, Eli & Garrett Roberts, Mason, Cayden & Jonathan Davis.

Funeral services are 3 p.m., Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Roy Vaden, Billy Dean Akers, Brad Akers, Junior Oden, Charles Summerland and Darrell Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers are Buddy Griever, Luther Richardson and Harry Shiver. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 352, Hamburg, AR 71646 or to the Hamburg High School Scholarship Fund, PO Box 30, Hamburg, AR 71646.

Mr. Charles Akers, 89, of Hamburg, died Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Pinewood Health and Rehabilitation Center in Crossett. Mr. Akers was a native and life long resident of Hamburg. He was the Owner and Operator of Akers Cleaners from 1952 to 1985. After he retired, he worked for the City of Hamburg and R.M. Courson Farms. He served at one time on the Hamburg City Council and the Ashley County Quorum Court and he was a member and a Deacon of the First Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a charter member of the Akers & Taylor Deer Camp. He loved spending time with his family and he enjoyed square dancing.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Catherine Shockley Akers in 2011; a granddaughter, Catherine Raelinn Elton in 1994; his parents, Joe Fletcher & Alma McGaha Akers and a brother, James Fletcher Akers.

He is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Elton and husband, Ray, Linda Akers, Vicky Rial and husband, Danny, all of Hamburg; three brothers, Billy Dean Akers of Hamburg, Joe Akers of Benton and Roe Akers of Little Rock; three granddaughters, Christy Roberts and husband, Scott, of Hamburg, Lisa Davis of Monticello and Lauren Gardner and husband, Matthew, of West Monroe, Louisiana; five great-grandsons, Eli & Garrett Roberts, Mason, Caden and Jonathan Davis and a host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Pennington officiating. Burial will be in the Hamburg Cemetery. Pallbearers are Luther Richardson, Junior Oden, Charles Summerland, Tom McLemore, Dr. J.D. Rankin and Wayne Courson. Honorary pallbearers are the Deacons of the First Baptist Church and the Employees of Pinewood Health and Rehabilitation Center. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, PO Box 352, Hamburg, AR 71655 or to Alzheimer’s Arkansas, 201 Markham Center Drive, Little Rock, AR 72205-1569.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday at the funeral home.
