ROGERS — Melvin "Mel" Eugene Townzen, age 88, of Rogers died Thursday, February 17th. He was born August 4, 1933. Visitation will be: Tuesday from 10:30- ll:15 a.m., then a celebration of life will begin Tuesday at 11:15 a.m. Burial was at Little Flock Cemetery. Memorials to: "Lottie Moon" Missions Program.

Melvin “Mel” Eugene Townzen, age 88, of Rogers died Thursday, February 17, 2022 at a local skilled care center. He was born August 4, 1933 in Rogers the son of Rose E. Wight and Charles Madison Townzen.

He attended Bentonville High School. He served in the U.S. Navy for over three years, where he earned an Honorable Discharge in June of 1954. Following his service in the Navy he joined the Civil Service Program with the U.S. Air Force where he served close to 40 years, retiring in 1992.

Mel enjoyed camping, woodworking, and he taught Sunday School for over 40 years, along with serving in the Prison Ministry for several years. He dedicated his life to serve the Lord in 1950 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Rogers. He has served at First Baptist Rogers since 1999 in the capacity as a Deacon, a Life Group Teacher, and he loved singing with the Saints Alive Choir.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, and one brother; John Albert Townzen.

Mel is survived by: his wife of 68 years; Betty Townzen, whom he married December 12, 1953, two sons; Doug Townzen and his wife Renee, of Sherman, Texas, Darren Townzen and his wife Connie, of Little Flock, one daughter; Donna Mansell and her husband Roger, of Rogers, one brother; Verlyn Perry and his wife Paulette, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, one sister; Doris Childers and her husband James, of Hartman, Arkansas, seven grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be: Tuesday from 10:30-11:15am at First Baptist Rogers at the Pleasant Grove location. The celebration of Mel’s life will begin at 11:15am with Pastor Wes George officiating. Burial was at Little Flock Cemetery with the maroon tie he wore when he married.

ROGERS — Betty Townzen, 88, of Rogers died July 15, in Rogers. She was born April 6, 1934, in Natalbany, La., to Tony Scafidel and Gertrude Ogden Scafidel.

Funeral services: Wednesday, July 20, at First Baptist Church of Rogers, Pleasant Grove Campus. Visitation: 10:15-11 a.m. Funeral: 11 a.m.

Betty Townzen, 88, of Rogers passed away July 15, 2022 at Mercy Hospital. She was born April 6, 1934 in Natalbany, LA to Tony Scafidel and Sandra Gertrude Ogden Scafidel.

Betty moved frequently to different areas of the south during her childhood, and eventually graduated from Murphy High School in Mobile, AL. Through the influence of Christian friends Betty accepted Christ at the age of 17, and soon met the love of her life Melvin “Mel” Townzen, whom she married in 1953.

Betty is remembered as a fantastic cook who was very hospitable to anyone who needed a meal. She was also a prayer warrior and a student of God’s Word, even completing a seminary course before her death. Among other talents, she was a gardener, a seamstress and quilter, and a talented artist. Her priorities in life were her family and her church, always using her talents to encourage and support both.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Mel Townzen in February.

Survivors include her two sons, Doug Townzen and his wife, Renee, of Sherman, Texas and Darren Townzen and his wife, Connie, of Little Flock; one daughter, Donna Mansell and her husband, Roger, of Rogers; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for Betty will be Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at First Baptist Church of Rogers, Pleasant Grove Campus. The visitation will be from 10:15-11am, and the funeral will be at 11am. Betty is interred at Little Flock Cemetery in Little Flock, AR next to Mel.
