David Ellis Collier, 60, of McAlester, Okla., died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, in a local nursing home. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Bishop Chapel of Memories under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service with Dr. Tim Russell officiating. David Ellis Collier, known as Ellis to his family and friends, was born July 8, 1952, in Fort Smith to Felix and Maizie Feemster Collier. He passed from this life to be with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at the age of 60 after a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Ellis grew up in Fort Smith and attended Fort Smith public schools, graduating from Northside High School, where he was a drum major for two years in the high school band. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Upon graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, Okla., with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., with a master of divinity degree, he attended the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine, where he received his bachelor of science degree as a physicians associate. Ellis was ordained to the ministry at Nichols Hills Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and served on church staffs in Arkansas, Oklahoma and North Carolina. He worked as a physicians associate for the Oklahoma State Veterans Administration in Ardmore and Sulphur, Okla., retiring in 2011, due to his illness. He was preceded in death by his father, Felix Collier; and mother, Maizie Collier. Ellis is survived by a sister, Sharron Lenington and husband Paul of McAlester; a brother, Garland Collier and wife Susan of Fort Smith; nephews, David Lenington and wife Lori of Sanger, Texas, Mark Lenington and wife Becky of Norman, Okla., and Donny Lenington and wife Stephanie of McAlester; great-nephews, Tyler Lenington, Jacob Lenington and Nicholas Lenington; great-nieces, Micaela Lenington, Amber Lenington and Amy Lenington; and many cousins, colleagues and friends.
