Mary Elma Reed 87, of El Dorado passed away Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Courtyard Health and Rehab.
Born October 31, 1932 in Cheniere, Louisiana she was the daughter of Whit and Effie Thornton Usrey. Mrs. Reed had retired from Southern Arkansas University as an English teacher. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Southern State College in 1964 and later, in 1971, received her Masters of English from Louisiana Tech University. She later studied Spanish in Mexico and literature in Ireland and the University of London. A deep appreciation for education was instilled on her , especially by her father. She related more than once that a major turning point decision for her was to complete her high school education at Baskin High School in Louisiana. She was an excellent and respected teacher of English at Huttig High School, El Dorado High School, and Southern Arkansas University.
She had an exceptional talent for conversation. She and her husband Ray saved and took many opportunities to travel ranging from California, Mexico, Central America, the South, New England, Ireland, and Great Britain. Her last trip was to St. Andrews in Scotland. A love of learning, literature, books and travel is part of her cherished legacy. She was a longtime member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death along with her parents were her husband, Ray Reed and brothers, Earl Usrey, Emmet Usrey, Jack Usrey and Josh Usrey.
Survivors include three sons, Bart Reed, Andy Reed, and Mike Reed all of El Dorado and a sister, Kayo Reed (Walter) of Lawson, AR. Surviving grandchildren are, Abbey Reed (Tommy Head), Josie Ginger (Harry), Lynsey Reed, Sean Reed (Lori), Cory Reed (Lisa) and Will Reed along with six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until service time Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Young’s.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Young’s Chapel with Rev. Neil Everett officiating with interment to follow in Burns-Ebenezer Cemetery under the direction of Young’s Funeral Directors.
