November 17, 1915 - July 25, 2018

Married: May 2, 1936

Elsie Coppett, age 102, of Camden, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, in Magnolia.

She was a founding member of Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellic Coppett; her parents, Herbert Jay and Edna Dean Ross; her sister, Selma Stiene Smith; and by her brothers, Carl Ross and Earle Ross. She is survived by her daughters, Sherry Pittman and Victoria Coppett, and by her son Roger Coppett; as well as by her grandchildren Emily Pittman, Eben Pittman and his wife Wendi, Kyle Asfahl and his wife Amanda Salov, and Erica Asfahl and her husband Nels Madsen; and also by her grandchildren Aiden Pittman, Lilli Pittman, and Ian Elliott.

Mrs. Coppett, also known as "Miss Elsie" and as "Mamaw" (by family and by friends alike), lived in Camden for her entire life except for the period when she moved to Long Beach, California, with her husband, Ellic, during World War II. While in Long Beach, she was a "Rosie the Riveter" at a Douglas Aircraft Company factory.

After the War's end, Elsie and Ellic moved back to Camden to make their home. Together they had three children (Victoria, Sherry, and Roger).

Miss Elsie worked as a homemaker for many years and then later as a clerk at the local Snow Hardware store. She could always be depended on to cook Southern comfort food --- particularly layer cakes -- for friends and family in times of celebration and in times of sadness and loss. She loved to grow vegetables and to can and freeze the bounty of her garden. (Her pickles in particular were legendary among all who were lucky enough to receive them.) Even more important to her than her vegetable garden, though, were her flower gardens where she'd give any flower a chance. Her jonquils, her irises, and especially her sunflowers--some reaching 10' tall--were enjoyed by friends and by strangers who drove by and noticed her gardens.

As much as she loved her gardens, though, Miss Elsie / Mom / Mamaw loved and took pride in her children, her grandchildren, and her great-grandchildren far more. They returned that love and will cherish her memory.

Funeral service will be at 10 AM Saturday at Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial in Bethesda Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM on Friday at Proctor Funeral Home in Camden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Camden Presbyterian Church. Ellec Coppett, aged 54, Stephens Rd., died suddenly Saturday night. He had recently undergone a series of tests in the hospital and had been dismissed. Mr. Coppett was born November 27, 1913 in Hampton and had been an employee of the Camden Postoffice since 1947. He was a city mail carrier and a member of the Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Miss Sherry Coppett of the home, Mrs. Mike Meeks of Fayetteville; one son, Roger Coppett; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Coppett of Camden; two brothers, Ervin Coppett of Stephens and Earl Coppett of Camden; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Harrell of Bearden and Mrs. Fay Sutton of Louisiana. Funeral services will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at the Camden Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial in Bethesda Cemetery. Letter carriers from the local postoffice will serve as pallbearers. Camden Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements. (Camden News - March 4, 1968)
