BRIDGFORD, Mary Arclissa DRUMMOND Massie - Mary Arclissa Drummond was born in Scuyler county, Mo., near Lancaster, August 22, 1870. She departed this life at Joplin, Mo. Jan. 10, 1932 at the age of 61. When but a child she moved with her parents to Fillmore county, Nebraska where she grew to womanhood. On Oct. 4, 1887 she was united to McLellan Massie. To this union six children were born, five girls and one son. After spending a few years of their married life in Nebraska they moved to Arkansas. Her husband lost his life in White river where he with a bunch of friends were picnicking and fishing. She braved the hardships of rearing her little brood without a father; keeping them all together. Again death entered her home and took a much beloved daughter, Mrs. Elmer Reed of Lyons, Kans. She later married Mr. Frank Bridgford. To this union one son was born who was left with them only four short years. On Jan. 7, 1925 Mr. Bridgford was called away. Since then she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. O.E. Mitchell of Joplin, Mo. In the early part of September she underwent an operation for cancer of breast which later entered the lung and sapped her vitality so rapidly that she was called home almost without warning. Several years ago she united with the First Methodist church in Rogers where she remained a faithful member. She was a wonderful mother - living for her children every hour. Just before her illness she pieced and quilted each a lovely quilt which they will always reverence as it was mother's last work of love for them. The children that are left to mourn the loss of mother are Mrs. Mae Fenton, Detroit; Mrs. Lena Karlstad, Detroit; Mrs. Verna Dean, Kansas City; Ernest Massie and Mrs. Blanch Mitchell of Joplin. Eleven grand children and two great grand children, four sisters and a brother are also left to mourn the loss of a much loved sister. She was layed to rest in the Rogers cemetery to await the resurrection.
