BELLA VISTA — Margaret M. Lewis died Jan. 15, 2009, at her home. She was born May 16, 1916, in Rulo, Neb., to James Samuel Theodore Smith and Theresia Emma Steiner Smith.
She graduated from Rulo High School and Peru State Teachers College with a bachelor's degree in education and completed her master's degree in education from Colorado State College in Greeley. She taught in 11 different rural schools in Nebraska and 20 years in Falls City, Neb., before retiring in 1977.
She moved to Bella Vista in 1979. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and was a charter member of the Crime Watch program in Bella Vista and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She was a charter member and president of the Methodist Quilters for a number of years, and enjoyed golf, bowling and ceramics.
She was preceded in death by son, Harold, in April 2008.
Survivors include five children, Robert Lewis and wife Ginny of Marble Falls, Texas, Margaret Ann Turner, Bella Vista, Elaine Penkava and husband Tom of Loveland, Colo., and Wayne Lewis and wife Susan of Lincoln, Neb.; 15 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home. Burial will be private.
A memorial service to celebrate her life is planned for mid-May. Memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, Springdale, or First United Methodist Church, Bella Vista.
