Gertrude "Gert" Canady Thomas, 68, of Van Buren, AR, died Saturday, August 22, 2015 in a local hospital.
She was born January 7, 1947 to Edward "Doc" Canady and Bernice Howell-Harris in Fort Smith, AR.

Gert left Fort Smith as a teenager and moved to Los Angeles, where she was a graduate of Freemont High School. She returned to Fort Smith, relocated to Van Buren and retired as the head nutritionist with New Haven Nursing Home.

Funeral will be Saturday, August 29, 2015, 11:00 a.m. at St. James Baptist Church with burial at Beal Cemetery, Newtown, AR.

Pallbearers will be Mitchell Parker, Terry Kursh, Richard Jones, Chris Terry, Robert Banks, and Bobby Driver. Honorary pallbearers will be Leo, Andre, and Greg Good, and Michael Bluford.

She is survived by a daughter, Angel Thomas of Van Buren; two sons, Anthony Cole-Canady of Fort Smith and Fred Thomas, Jr. of Tulsa, OK; a brother, Rev. Greg Canady of Fort Smith; a sister/cousin, Queen Ottawa of Fort Smith; 8 grandchildren: Davonna Thomas, Denna Clark, Destiny Bell, Antonio Hairston, D'Shante Thomas, Quashaun Kursh, Brandon Lowery-Canady, and Jordan Chandler Lowery; and 1 great granddaughter, Kamdyn Lowery; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
