On Feb. 23, 1914, John and Francis Hutchins Hughes brought their 10th and youngest child, Arlin, into the world. Little did they know the joy and happiness their son would bring to so many for so long. As a teen and without professional instruction, Arlin became an accomplished musician who played the fiddle, guitar, banjo, organ, harmonica, tambourine and just about any instrument he came in contact with.
For almost 80 years, Arlin entertained at musicals, parties, talent contests, church and community events, and at home with his family. For several years, he and his daughter, Chris, played at Silver Dollar City and had a local weekly radio program. What a talent and showman he was. Playing the fiddle on his head or behind his back, performing songs he wrote, such as "The Fox Chase" in which he sang for both dogs and foxes. He charmed the young and the old from all walks of life. Arlin never met a stranger and seldom went anywhere without running into some of his fans. He loved to laugh, to make others laugh, and to play his music.
He was an inspiration to those who played with him or aspired to play like him. He had the sweetest smile, an unassuming manner, and a toe that was destined to tap. Although Arlin was a man who enjoyed the simple things in life like buttermilk and cornbread, a good pair of overalls, a breath of fresh air at evening's end, and a good laugh at an old tale, his musical gifts were truly remarkable.
On Jan. 8, 2006, Arlin, our dear sweet daddy, left this world to join our beloved mother, Anna Lorene, his wife of 63 years, who passed away in 2004.
Arlin is survived by four daughters, Rose (Earl) Underhill of Winslow, Chris (Johnny) Franklin of Springdale, Shirley (James) Terrell of Dallas and Letisha (Shannon) Foley of Springdale; grandchildren, Jimmy Underhill, Debbie Harris, Valerie Whitmill, Kristina Limardo O'Neal, Kelsey and Jordan Foley; great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Dustin and Tyler Whitmill, Kyle and Corey Harris, Sarah, Josh and Aaron Underhill, and Melayna Limardo. Arlin is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews, a host of friends and Margie Arrendondo, his loving caregiver, nurse and companion for the last eight months. Thank you Margie, for the love and patience you gave our dad.
We will always remember Daddy's words whenever we would depart, "Be careful on the road," and "I love you more than you will ever know." We miss you, Daddy, and we will always love you more than you will ever know. Thank you for making our world melodic and fun.
Memorial services and a celebration of Arlin's life will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville with Dr. Gene Fulcher officiating.
Burial will be in Brentwood Cemetery immediately following the service.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, or the Save the Music Foundation.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Moore's.

Anna Lorene Hughes, 77, of Fayetteville, a devoted wife and companion, precious mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, went to her heavenly home on March 6,, 2004. Lorene passed away due to complications from post-polio syndrome. Lorene lived a full and productive life, having been married to Arlin for 63 years, and raising four daughters, Rose Underhill (Earl) of Winslow, Chris Franklin (Johnny) of Springdale, Shirley Terrell (Jim) of Dallas, and Letisha Foley (Shannon) of Springdale.
Grandchildren are Jimmy Underhill (Terre) of Winslow, Debbie Harris (Wendell) of Fayetteville, Valerie Whitmill of Winslow, Kristina Limardo O'Neal of Manhattan, and Kelsey and Jordan Foley of Springdale.
Great-grandchildren are Stephanie, Dustin and Tyler Whitmill; Sarah, Josh and Aaron Underhill; Kyle and Corey Harris; and Melayna Lexa Limardo.
Lorene is also survived by a brother, Frank Tomlinson of Durham, and nieces, Susie and Sandy, and many other loving friends and family.
Lorene was born on March 18, 1926, in Winslow to Lillard and Beulah Tomlinson.
Although she was a homemaker for much of her life, she had careers at both Campbell Soup Co. and the Fayetteville City Hospital. She loved reading and accumulated quite a library. She enjoyed watching "Jeopardy!" and 'Wheel of Fortune," but her biggest job was spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Lorene was a dedicated and hard worker, and she also traveled many places and saw many sights. She rode the rides at Six Flags, saw the lights of San Francisco, heard the music at the Grand Ole Opry and walked on the beaches of Florida. She accompanied Arlin when he played and sang at musicals, and she cooked the best raisin pie and sour cream cake this side of heaven. She was a member of the Christian Church.
She was a woman of many talents, great strength and courage, and much intelligence. Lorene, our dearest mother, wife, grandmother, sister and friend, will live on in our hearts forever. May God grant you eternal peace and rest. Mama, we will always love you.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. The Rev. Gene Fulcher will officiate.
Burial will be in Brentwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Moore's Chapel. The family will be present.
The family expresses special thanks and gratitude to nurses, Carl and Janice Nelson, who took such wonderful and loving care of Lorene in her last few days.
Memorials may be made to March of Dimes, 1275 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains, N.Y. 10605.
